R2O and ODEMapster beyond the NeOn Project

    From NeOn Project

The UPM framework [1,2] to Upgrade Relational Legacy Data to the Semantic Web consists of

    • R2O, a fully declarative, XML-based language that allows the description of arbitrarily complex mapping expressions between ontology elements (concepts, attributes and relations) and relational elements (relations and attributes).
    • The ODEMapster processor, which generates Semantic Web instances from relational instances based on the mapping description expressed in an R2O document.

We have integrated our framework within the NeOn Toolkit, as a plugin. This plugin adds to the NeOn Toolkit the functionality to create R2O mappings and to execute them with the ODEMapster processor.

Moreover, within the context of the EU ADMIRE project, the NeOn technology is being reused. The UPM framework provides distributed access to the ODEMapster technology by using OGSA-DAI. OGSA-DAI is a framework for integrating distributed sources of data along Grid systems. The combination of these two systems, OGSA-DAI and ODEMapster, allows users to integrate different types of distributed data sources (relational file systems and ontology data), thus permitting robust and scalable access to them.

The UPM team presented the ODEMapster plugin for the NeOn Toolkit.during the 18th International World Wide Conference, held on April 20th-24th, 2009, The demonstration took place at the UPM stand, on April 22 and 24. Researchers from all over the world gathered at this conference to present their latest results on various topics related to the Web and Semantic Web. Many people attended the ODEMapster plugin demonstration, and expressed their interest both in our plugin and in the NTK itself.

Finally, C.M. Fletcher, from Durham University, UK, has improved the ODEMapster plugin to generate D2R [3], an alternative language to R2O to be used for mapping ontologies and databases. He has been working with the NeOn Toolkit sources and the ODEMapster plugin for his project degree in Computer Science.
