NeOn in Evidence at ESWC 2009
From NeOn Project
The 6th Annual European Semantic Web Conference 2009 was held in Heraklion, Greece, from 31st of May to 4th of June.
As well as sponsoring the event, NeOn had a strong presence in the organising committee, where Valentina Presutti and Jérôme Euzenat acted as workshop chairs, and Marta Sabou organized the PhD symposium. In addition a variety of events and sessions were organised or chaired by NeOn members, including:
- Organizing and presenting a tutorial on Extreme Design (XD): Pattern-based Ontology design (CNR, Valentina Presutti, Aldo Gangemi, Eva Blomqvist).
- Chairing the workshop on Context, Information and Ontologies (CIAO2009) (UPM, Jose Manuel Gomez); with Keynote speech from JSI (Marko Grobelnik).
- Organizing the Semantic Sensor Web workshop (UPM, Oscar Corcho).
- Organizing the Inductive Reasoning and Machine Learning on the Semantic Web workshop (IRMLeS2009) (JSI, Marko Grobelnik).
- Chairing the session: Ontologies and Natural Language (UPM, Asunción Gómez Pérez).
- Chairing the Applications Research II session (CNR, Aldo Gangemi).
- Chairing the Annotation and Tagging II session (OU, Marta Sabou) .
Members of the NeOn project gave a variety of presentations and technology demonstrations, including:
- Presenting a paper on Frame detection over the semantic web (CNR, Aldo Gangemi).
- Presenting a paper on Semantic Annotation of Web Service descriptors (CNR, Alessandro Adamou)
- Presenting the project at the EU Matchmaking session (OU, Mathieu d'Aquin).
- Presenting a poster about benchmarking of semantic technologies (UPM, Raul Garcia).
- Demonstrating the LabelTranslator NeOn plug-in (UPM, Mauricio Espinoza Mejia).
- Demonstrating the Cupboard ontology hosting system (OU, Mathieu d'Aquin).
- Demonstrating the Evolva ontology evolution system (OU, Fouad Zablith).
- Demonstrating the FLOR system for ontology based enrichment of ontologies (OU, Sophia Angeletou).
- Demonstrating the RaDON NeOn Plugin (UKARL).
- Presenting a poster on HistoryVis (JSI , Ruben Sipos, Marko Grobelnik, Dunja Mladenic, and others);
- Presenting a paper on Ontology evolution at the PhD Symposium (OU, Fouad Zablith).
- Presenting a Poster and Demo on Detecting and managing semantic relations between ontologies on the semantic web (OU, Carlo Allocca).
In summary, NeOn was very much in evidence at the conference, with several presenters external to the projects also explicitly referring to NeOn results. In addition during the past few days we have established many new contacts with potential users and research partners and we look forward to verifying over the next few months the tangible outcomes arising from these new collaborations.
